Origin Piece VI — In Her Light

Some works are created as origins. Others become one.

In Her Light was painted on 14 January 2020.

At the time, there was no Baldr | Authored Work. There were no Origin Pieces, no Origin Collections and no system connecting a singular artwork to everything that might emerge from it later.

There was simply a portrait.

A face, translated through colour.

Measuring 100 × 160 cm, In Her Light has a physical presence that goes beyond the intimacy traditionally associated with portraiture. The large-scale canvas brings the viewer face to face with the subject, while colour gradually takes over from conventional representation.

Rather than attempting to reproduce natural skin tones, the portrait was built from warm oranges, pinks, muted greens and earthy reds. Darker areas surround and intersect the figure, allowing the face to emerge through contrast. Colour became less a description of appearance and more a way of expressing presence.

The result sits somewhere between portraiture and abstraction. The person remains unmistakably present, but the image is not dependent on literal representation. Light, colour and shape carry as much of the portrait as the features themselves.

An Origin Piece, years later

In Her Light predates Baldr by several years.

That matters.

An Origin Piece does not have to be created with the intention of becoming one. The designation is not chronological. It describes the role a work comes to occupy within Baldr | Authored Work.

Some works begin something.

Others reveal, years after they were made, that something was already beginning.

Looking back at In Her Light from the perspective of Baldr, many of the ideas that now define the practice are already present: transformation, authorship, the tension between recognition and abstraction, and the use of an existing visual language as a starting point rather than an endpoint.

For that reason, the painting was later selected as Origin Piece VI — In Her Light.

Not because its history was rewritten, but because its place within a larger body of work became visible.

One of one

The original painting remains unique.

It was gifted by the artist and is now held in a private collection. Unlike some other Origin Pieces within Baldr | Authored Work, In Her Light will not become the source of an Origin Collection.

It remains what it was created to be: a singular work.

That distinction is part of the idea behind the Origin Pieces. They are not defined by what comes after them. Some may give rise to new objects, garments or collections. Others exist entirely on their own.

What connects them is authorship.

Each Origin Piece represents a unique work within the evolving practice of Baldr | Authored Work — a point in that practice that deserves to be marked, documented and preserved.

In Her Light is one of those points.
